Amazed by the fact that they have the intelligence to try and communicate to them, Neville puts his gun down and returns the female. Neville then realizes that the alpha male is identifying the female upon which he was experimenting by a butterfly tattoo, and the Darkseekers simply want her back. The alpha male then makes a butterfly-shaped smear on the glass, which makes Neville very confused. They are greeted by some military officers and Anna hands the cure to one of them.Īlternate: The alpha male suddenly ceases its attack after Neville asks him to stop out of panic. The next day, before the crack of dusk, Anna and Ethan discover that her theory is right as they arrive at the survivors' camp in Vermont. He then takes a grenade and kills the Darkseekers and himself, saving the cure.
Theatrical Ending: Neville draws a vial of her blood and gives it to Anna, before shutting Ethan and her inside a coal chute in the back of the lab.
